EMI Calculator — Complete Guide for Indian Borrowers
What is EMI and how is it calculated?
EMI stands for Equated Monthly Instalment. It is the fixed amount you pay your bank every month until your loan is fully repaid. Each EMI payment has two components — the principal (the actual loan amount) and the interest charged by the bank. In the early months of your loan, a larger portion of your EMI goes toward interest. As you pay down the loan, more of each payment goes toward the principal. This is called loan amortisation.
EMI Formula Used in This Calculator
The standard EMI formula used by all Indian banks is:
Where:
P = Principal loan amount
r = Monthly interest rate (Annual rate ÷ 12 ÷ 100)
n = Loan tenure in months

Tips to Reduce Your EMI Burden
- Make a higher down payment — reduces principal, which directly reduces EMI
- Choose a longer tenure — lowers monthly EMI but increases total interest paid
- Negotiate interest rate — even 0.5% reduction saves lakhs over 20 years
- Make prepayments when possible — extra payments reduce outstanding principal
- Maintain a good CIBIL score (750+) — banks offer lower rates to good borrowers
- Transfer to lower rate bank — balance transfer if another bank offers better rate
